Barcaldine
We arrived really late into Barcaldine which was a bit sad as there were a few things i would have liked to have seen in the daylight! The first being the D'arcy Doyle mural. I grew up with my Mum loving his paintings and one year all she anted for her birthday was a print of one of his paintings with a Jacaranda tree in it. I also quite like his work. So I was keen to see the mural. However, it wasn't overly exciting at 5am!
The other exciting thing about Barcaldine is the tree of knowledge. Nathan tells me that this is where the Labour party originated from during the Shearers strike. The tree was unfortunately poisoned (Nathan suspects the Liberal Party!) and died but what is left has been preserved and is beautifully presented in front of the train station. It has this massive cube and when you walk inside it there are planks of wood dangling. Apparently the wood planks are shaped to show where the original branches would have been. Again, 5am dopes not do this sight justice, nor do my photos!
