Every year on Miles Franklins birthday Miles Franklin Primary School celebrates by presenting the awards for its Brilliant Writers Competition. They also have a day of dressing up and celbrating life as it was in the early 1900's. More information about Miles Franklin can be found here.
This year was the first year that Matthew wanted to enter the writing competition. The way the competition works is stimulus pictures called seeds are pinned to the noticeboard and students can write whatever genre they like as long as it relates in some way to the stimulus provided. Because we are a french school students can even submit thier entries in french if they choose.
Matthew's stimulus picture was a submarine and this was a draft that he later went on to submit.
Turns out it is vitally important to write "The End" otherwise no one knows its the end!
Turns out his entry was good enough to make the finals and today he collected his certificate and prize for getting a highly commended! He is going to love spending his $15 Dymocks gift voucher this weekend!
We are so proud of him on so many levels. We are proud that he had the guts to enter (young boys often dont enjoy the creative writing process and Matthew certainly isn't a fan!) We are proud that he got a great result but we are even prouder that our family history is in great hands!
Well done Matthew! I couldn't convince Xander to enter this year - maybe next time.
ReplyDeleteI just checked with my brother (Xander's uncle Ian), who used to be in the Navy, and he served on HMAS Sheean (he was one of the commissioning seamen when the sub was launched).
ReplyDeleteWow Karen! No doubt he would have met my family as most of them went to the launch and my dad has often kept in touch with the ship and the crew.
