Grass. We have GRASS!!!

After many months of dust and dirt we finally laid turf in our backyard this afternoon.  We are absolutely buggered, but I think we will have a life time of enjoyment from our fresh, green grassed back yard.

It all started Friday afternoon when Nath hired a rotary hoe.

There's something I love about my husband using heavy machinery.....

4 hours of that and Nath was about had it.  But I know he had fun!

We have fantastic neighbours and friends.  Daniel from down the bottom of the street spent all weekend up at our place helping Nath create a crushed granite path.  We decided to put a path from the back gate down to barkleys dog run.  Lets hope the kids and dog learn to run on it and not the grass..... we can only hope!!

Michelle from next door spent most of her weekend helping out.  She did a massive job. And even after the hours she spent on Saturday helping out - she came back on Sunday to help some more.  Thanks heaps Michelle.

The boys helped out heaps too.  Actually it probably wasn't heaps of help it might have only been a little.  Once they saw all the hills of dirt being created they soon came to realise that they would make awesome jumps for dump trucks and monster trucks.  There was even talk that Daddy should leave the lumps of dirt under the grass so they could have monster truck jumps all the time........ It didn't stick.

By Sunday afternoon, the path was in and the backyard had started to take shape.

Monday afternoon 5 cubic meters of top soil turned up.  It was then 100s of wheel barrow trips back and forward between the front yard and the back.  Once again our wonderful neighbours were there to lend a hand.  Cleon, Michelle and Jose helped out with the dirt and Daniel helped out with the rolling.  It was an awesome job by all. We managed to move 3.5 cubic meters of the dirt on Monday afternoon with the rest left for Tuesday afternoon.  By Tuesday though, Nathan's body was wrecked - something about the ground being so far down, and then when he was down on the ground he couldn't get up.

Then today the turf arrived.  130 square meters of turf.  Nath was worried about if he had enough, or too much....... Seeing two and a half pallets of turf sitting there - it looked like lots!!!

The boys helped out where they could. Ben had suprising strength and was able move some big bits of turf.  He also took on an alter-ego - Benny McKenny.  Benny McKenny had the job of rolling out the rolls of turf.  He is one crazy little kid!

So from 11am through to 4:30 in the afternoon, Nathan and I laid roll after roll of turf.  With each wheelbarrow full of turf the pile slowly dwindled.

In the end we had just the right amount of turf.  Nothing was left over and nothing was left unturffed (best measuring Nathan has ever done knowing some of his past errors).  Barkley's dog run got some of the last pieces of turf, put together like a weird puzzle with lots of different shapes.  But it is done and it is gorgeous!

So we now have turf and we will be spending most of our time watering and watching the grass grow.  But it will be so much fun to do our first rolly-polly down the hill when it is all settled in.

And finally a note to Poppy, that will be the last time dirt, dust, bob cats or anything else tears up the backyard!!

Not the only winner!

Brenton Rickard has not been the only Rickard claiming gold medals this month! The boys' swim school made a fuss over the Commonwealth Games and every swimmer got presented with a medal on the dais whilst the national anthem played!

Matthew thinks he could get really used to this!

Floriade 2010

So when we got home all we wanted to do was go and see Floriade. We haven't missed a year since we have been here. Unfortunately Daddy missed it as he had to travel for work but it just meant that the boys were included in the Annual Rickard Photography Competition!

Ryan's effort!

Matthew's

A lone tulip among the daisies! Grumpy loves these!

We missed most of the daffodils this year. This was like the last decent one left.

Lots of orange and yellow's this year.

The boys played in the sandpit for a while and made this!

Ben's entry!

Matthew helped out a street performer.

These are the controversial sculpture that were kicked off Lake George (the lake just outside of Canberra that never has any water in it!)

Another oopsy!
So who do you think wins????

Flor-i-yard!

I am a novice gardener. I try really hard... most of the time and love, love, love it when my garden flowers but really, really, really hate weeding!
While we were away the weeds nearly overtook the whole garden but between the weeds my garden still flowered!

All sorts of tulips this year!

In many different shapes and colours!

I was worried that while we were gallivanting the country I would have missed my favourite tree flowering. But I didn't. It flowered like two days after we got home! Yay!

We even have ranuculas this year! Unfortunately my daffodils and jonquils have failed to flower! But maybe next year!

Some of our fruit trees are going gangbusters! The raspberry is looking mighty fine!

And the strawberries are awesome. The apple trees have flowers and the plum even has budding fruit! The dwarf nectarine and peach, however, still looks like sticks! I have moved it into a sunnier position in the hope of bringing it our of its winter dormancy! I just hope it is still dormant rather than dead! Coz the look much the same!
